Report: Apple May Unveil ‘Ajax’, a Competitor to ChatGPT, at WWDC 2024
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to unveil its own Large Language Model (LLM) at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The model is expected to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini LLM, and others from Amazon and Meta.
Gurman says Apple’s AI tools are far behind, especially since ChatGPT was released in 2022. But it’s expected to arrive in iOS 18, with a major language model called Ajax. Gurman says Apple has been testing it since early last year.
As for real-world app usage, Apple may be planning to add auto-summary and auto-complete features to apps like Keynote and Pages. In addition, the iPhone maker is also considering adding artificial intelligence capabilities to Apple Music, which may introduce automatic playlist creation. A renovation is also planned for Siri.
Additionally, it has been reported that Apple is developing a system to streamline the process for AppleCare employees, making it easier for them to assist customers with troubleshooting and inquiries.
However, Apple is making progress, it is still behind the competition. Gurman believes it will take at least until 2025 for Apple to fully scale its generative AI vision. Meanwhile, Google and Samsung, two of Apple’s biggest rivals in the Android space, are ramping up their AI offerings.
Google has already released a number of AI-centric features with its Pixel 8 lineup with Gemini Nano integration, and Samsung plans to make its upcoming Galaxy S24 lineup all AI with a focus on Galaxy AI.
